Crear tan rápido como pensás: IA en visual storytelling // Build as Fast as You Think: AI for Visual Storytelling
Tuesday September 8, 2026 1:40pm - 2:05pm CEST

----

I want to share how, at The Times and The Sunday Times, we're combining AI, UX, and data visualization to build internal tools and create new forms of visual storytelling.
We're a small but highly effective team. This way of working has enabled us to produce projects that have received international awards while also helping our audience discover and embrace new ways of consuming journalism.
In this talk, I'll share concrete examples of how we integrate these disciplines into our editorial workflow, the lessons we've learned, and how small teams can build innovative newsroom products with outsized impact. I'll also explore a question that's reshaping creative and editorial work: what happens when experimentation is (almost) free, and building becomes as fast as thinking?

Death to Boring Work: an AI Intern in Our Slack
Tuesday September 8, 2026 1:40pm - 2:05pm CEST
Cancellations, email changes, failed payments… the invisible work that eats up any newsroom's or nonprofit's hours. At Civio, we've handed it over to TobIAs, an AI agent that lives in our Slack and runs 100% locally: our donors' data never leaves the office. We'll share how we built it with open-source software, what it can do unsupervised (and what it can't), and the lessons we learned the hard way.

Ditch the funnel! Build community instead // Olvídate del embudo: construye comunidad
Tuesday September 8, 2026 1:40pm - 2:05pm CEST
The sales funnel was built to convert strangers to clients. It was never intended to be applied to community building. In the age of omnipresent AI content, human connection is one of the last true differentiators. At Republik, we have successfully followed a distinct community-first approach. People don't want to be converted, they want to be part of something meaningful. In five minutes I'll present the key learnings in community building from the first 10 years of Republik Magazine. The essence on how we got to grow from a small group of people to a 36'000 member strong and resilient community.

-------

From Hype to Impact: The Stories Missing from the AI Conversation
Tuesday September 8, 2026 4:45pm - 5:15pm CEST

-----
AI is not just a technology—it is also a narrative. And the way we talk about it shapes the questions we ask, as well as the ones we fail to ask.
Today, the conversation around AI is dominated by productivity and innovation, while its social, environmental, and political consequences remain largely out of the spotlight.
In this talk, I will explore a central question: How does the language we use to describe artificial intelligence shape the stories we choose to tell?
Drawing on my work at La Rebeldía Tropical and the documentary What Is It Like to Live Next to a Google Data Center?, winner of a Telly Award in Science and Technology, I will share examples of reporting that centers communities and examines the power dynamics behind technological development.

-------
"It showed up in my feed" means something different depending on the screen you're looking at. On Google, it means Search or Discover. On YouTube, it's a recommendation on your homepage. Every platform has its own path to discovery.
News organizations typically produce content once and distribute it everywhere, without fully understanding which audiences encounter it on which platforms—or in what format.
This session presents a real-world audit of a single news event across five platforms. It is not about how to optimize distribution; it is about what we found. The same story, five completely different patterns of discovery and consumption.
The timing couldn't be more relevant: Google has just announced that Search Console will begin including metrics from social and video platforms. This is a conversation the news industry is going to have anyway—this session brings evidence to help shape it.

Who's Really Writing the News in Greece? AI, Disclosure, and the iNews Response // ¿Quién está escribiendo realmente las noticias en Grecia? IA, transparencia y la respuesta de iNews.
Tuesday September 8, 2026 4:45pm - 5:15pm CEST
AI-generated text is already flowing into Greek online media, but almost no one admits it: neither the outlets nor the journalists, and least of all to the readers. This talk maps the current state of AI-assisted news production in Greece, drawing on fresh graduate research that traces the escalating, largely undisclosed use of AI for article writing. I'll lay out the structural pressures pushing Greek newsrooms toward automation, such as fragile media economics, time pressure, weak regulation, and language models that still underperform in Greek, and what these mean for information integrity. Against that backdrop, I'll introduce iNews, an Erasmus+ project coordinated by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with news agencies and media partners across Greece, Portugal, France, and Cyprus, that equips journalists to use AI responsibly through hands-on bootcamps, a support chatbot, summer schools, and a multilingual podcast. The case of Greece works as a warning and a testbed for any small-language media market facing the same shift.

-------
