SUMMARY:IA para investigar más y mejor - AI for More Effective Investigative Reporting
Throughout the session\, special attention will be given to understanding the mechanisms behind how this technology works.\nThe talk will explore specific examples and examine how AI is applied and contributes in each scenario. The goal is for participants to leave with a set of practical case studies that help them develop an intuition for when and how to incorporate AI into investigative projects—from simple scripts to agentic AI systems.

SUMMARY:De la extracción al intercambio: mercados de contenidos para el Internet impulsado por agentes de IA //From Extraction to Exchange: Content Markets for the Agentic Internet
AI is straining that bargain. AI systems increasingly summarize\, train on\, and ground responses in human-generated content while routing readers around the original source\, shifting economic value away from the people who produce it. The advent of the agentic Internet exacerbates the need for a new business model that works both for creators and AI companies. The answer isn't to block AI\, but to rebuild the bargain on clearer terms that work for everyone. Current infrastructure like robots.txt is too blunt\; it fails to distinguish between search\, training\, and agentic use\, creating uncertainty for both publishers and developers. Recent Cloudflare data confirms this imbalance: nearly 90% of AI crawler requests are for training or mixed purposes\, not exclusively for search\, which is the most critical for publisher visibility. That's a problem for publishers\, and for AI developers who have no scalable way to know what's allowed. Fixing this will also improve AI. Models need fresh\, high-quality human content to stay accurate\, diverse\, and useful. Without it\, they feed on synthetic material\, accelerating data degradation and model collapse. A permissions layer isn't a tax on AI — it's what keeps the well from running dry. Cloudflare's role is to make this exchange efficient for both sides: give creators visibility and granular control over how their content is used\, and give AI developers a scalable and efficient path to permissioned content under clear terms. As the Internet becomes increasingly agentic\, creators and AI companies need more efficient ways to connect and exchange value. We need scalable mechanisms for content discovery and monetization – unlocking value exchange\, while ensuring the information ecosystem remains diverse\, competitive\, and trustworthy.\n\n\n

From AI Policy to AI Governance: Build Rules Your Newsroom Can Actually Use
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be held in english\nA clear AI policy is an essential foundation for responsible AI use in a newsroom. However\, for a policy to be effective\, its principles must be translated into concrete rules\, responsibilities\, approval processes\, and workflows that journalists and editors can apply in real situations.\n\nA 2026 review by the Center for News\, Technology & Innovation\, drawing on 30 recent studies of AI governance in journalism\, found that newsroom AI policies often emphasize important principles such as transparency\, human oversight\, and verification\, but do not always provide sufficient guidance on how those principles should be implemented in daily editorial work.\n\nThis is where AI governance becomes essential. Governance connects the policy to practice. It determines who can approve an AI tool or workflow\, which uses require additional oversight\, how risks are assessed\, who verifies AI-assisted work\, when content should be disclosed or labelled\, and what happens when an error or incident occurs.\n\n"From AI Policy to AI Governance: Build Rules Your Newsroom Can Actually Use" is a hands-on workshop that will help participants answer these questions and turn responsible AI principles into practical newsroom decisions.\n\nParticipants will work on both parts of the challenge. They will begin developing or strengthening an AI policy\, while also creating the governance elements needed to put that policy into practice.\n\nThe workshop is grounded in my work with newsrooms and media professionals on AI literacy\, responsible adoption\, editorial workflows\, internal guidelines\, and AI policy development. Through this work\, I repeatedly encountered similar challenges: vague language\, unclear responsibilities\, inconsistent disclosure practices\, missing rules for high-risk uses\, insufficient attention to third-party tools and data protection\, and policies that journalists could not easily apply in their daily work.\n\nThese recurring challenges led me to develop the free AImpactful AI Governance Builder\, a guided tool and workshop\, that helps newsrooms create or improve their public AI policies\, internal guidelines\, disclosure rules\, risk registers\, governance structures\, incident-response procedures\, and own training plans.\n\nThey will use its methodology during the workshop and will be able to continue developing their policies and governance documents afterwards\, involve colleagues\, and adapt the materials to the needs\, size\, and resources of their own organization.\n\nThe 90-minute workshop will include five practical stages:\n\n1. Map current and planned AI use\nParticipants will identify where AI is already being used or considered across the newsroom.\nThis first step will help participants connect the policy to real workflows rather than treating AI governance as an abstract exercise.\n\n2. Assess and classify risk\nParticipants will examine how the level of risk changes depending on the tool\, task\, content\, data\, and editorial context.\nThey will distinguish lower risk uses from sensitive or high-risk applications.\n\n3. Build the core policy rules\nParticipants will begin defining the central rules of their AI policy\, including:\n• permitted\, restricted\, and prohibited uses\;\n• requirements for human review and verification\;\n• situations requiring additional editorial approval\;\n• rules for confidential information\, sources\, and personal data\;\n• expectations concerning accuracy\, copyright\, fairness\, and accountability\;\n• rules governing external AI tools\;\n• disclosure and labelling of AI-assisted and AI-generated content.\nThey will also consider how disclosure should differ depending on the role AI played in producing the content\, rather than relying on a single label for every use.\n\n4. Create the governance processes\nParticipants will move beyond the policy document and define how the rules will work in practice.\nThey will consider:\n• who approves AI tools and new use cases\;\n• who reviews high-risk or sensitive uses\;\n• how decisions and approved tools should be documented\;\n• how staff should raise concerns or report problems\;\n• how the newsroom should respond to AI-related errors or incidents\;\n• what training staff need\;\n• how policies\, tools\, and workflows should be reviewed.\nThis stage will help them connect editorial responsibility with clear roles and decision-making processes.\n\n5. Test and improve the framework\nParticipants will apply their draft rules to realistic newsroom scenarios. This will help them identify what documents provides enough guidance when journalists face time pressure\, uncertainty\, sensitive information\, synthetic content\, or a new AI tool.\nThe group will also examine common weaknesses found in AI policies and internal guidelines\, including:\n• broad commitments without practical instructions\;\n• undefined terms such as “appropriate” or “responsible” use\;\n• unclear responsibility and ownership\;\n• inconsistent disclosure...

SUMMARY:Las claves para crear una newsletter eficaz // How to Build an Effective Newsletter
This hands-on workshop will explore how to create a successful newsletter\, covering the essential decisions involved in defining its purpose\, developing its editorial strategy\, and publishing it consistently.\nDrawing on years of experience publishing my own newsletters—Tendenci@s&nbsp\;and\, more recently\,&nbsp\;Hoy en Internet—I will share practical lessons\, best practices\, and common pitfalls. I have also spent years researching the newsletter ecosystem\, following leading experts in the field\, and am currently writing a book on the subject.\nThe session will also include a preview of an experimental project I am about to launch for&nbsp\;Tendenci@s: an AI chatbot built on nine years of archived newsletter content. This case study will illustrate how newsletters can become not only a distribution channel but also a valuable knowledge base that can be repurposed using AI to create new ways for audiences to access and interact with information.

SUMMARY:Do Agents Have Needs?
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be held in english\nAI agents are already acting on behalf of your audiences — retrieving\, summarising and delivering information before a person ever reaches your journalism. The signals that make journalism trustworthy — attribution\, uncertainty\, chronology\, editorial intent — are exactly what machine processing tends to strip out. In the first half of this workshop\, participants audit a selection of their own content against the Agent Readiness Layer: a practical framework mapping each human user need against what an agent requires to serve it faithfully. The audit tends to be revealing.\n\nThe second half moves from diagnosis to design. Groups identify the biggest gaps in their content\, metadata and editorial workflow — and sketch what changes would make their journalism genuinely agent-ready without sacrificing the judgment that makes it worth retrieving. Participants leave with a prioritised gap analysis and concrete next steps.

SUMMARY:Everyone Can Build: A Newsroom Buildathon // Todos pueden crear con IA: un buildathon para redacciones.
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a hands-on AI buildathon for the people who make news and content happen — journalists\, publishers\, editors\, designers\, entrepreneurs\, and anyone working in or around a newsroom. Over a single session\, attendees will go from "I've never built an AI tool" to a working\, secure AI application that they own and can keep iterating on after the event.\nThe workshop follows a learn\, apply\, and deploy model. Participants learn the basics of AI tools and AI security\, apply them to a problem they care about from their own work\, and ship a functional application on the Cloudflare developer platform — all within the session. We remove the practical barriers that typically keep non-developers out of AI building: servers\, infrastructure setup\, paid tooling\, and starter-code intimidation. \n\nThe session is built around problems attendees actually encounter in their day jobs: a local outlet building a tool to help fact-check in local languages\, an editor automating tedious transcript clean-up\, a designer prototyping an interactive explainer\, or a reporter building a public-records search agent. Participants pick a problem that matters to them and walk out with something they can use. Every part of this buildathon can be tailored for the audience\, as Cloudflare has robust experience on this topic. For example\, if better for participants\, the buildathon can be focused where every participant builds one tool for one specific use case - e.g.\, only as it relates to workflows. \n\nCloudflare believes AI should be accessible to everyone\, and the media community is too often left out of the current wave of AI capacity-building.

SUMMARY:AURA: Diseñar sistemas de inteligencia editorial con IA para medios independientes // AURA: Building AI Editorial Intelligence Systems in an Independent Newsroom
Like most\, it publishes under constant pressure\, &nbsp\;with no time to systematically analyze what's working and why. AURA is a three-agent AI system we built on n8n that connects &nbsp\;Analytics tools to generate automated editorial intelligence: what's being read\, how\, and what that should mean for editorial decisions. This talk covers what we built\, how a non-technical journalist led the process\, the limitations we hit\, and what surprised us. AURA was also presented at the WAN-IFRA World News Media Congress in Marseille in 2025.

SUMMARY:Building Conversational AI that Newsrooms Can Trust - Meedan
DESCRIPTION:This lightning talk introduces Suwali\, Meedan's multilingual AI platform for trusted knowledge. Today's AI chatbots are trained primarily on English-language content and typically answer with confidence\, even when they are wrong. For newsrooms\, civil society groups\, and human rights organizations\, that creates a difficult choice: adopt AI and risk misinforming your audience\, or skip in and miss out on the audience growth that AI can help deliver. I'll demonstrate how Suwali takes a different approach. Unlike leading LLM chatbots\, Suwali retrieves information directly from a curated multilingual knowledge base built from an organization's own publications\, archives\, and documents. Every answer is grounded in source material and includes citations. When the answer cannot be found\, Suwali simply says\, "I don't know." Using a live demonstration\, I'll show how this "multilingual library" model enables trustworthy AI that respects local knowledge\, works across languages\, and helps organizations make their expertise accessible without sacrificing accuracy or control.

SUMMARY:Crear tan rápido como pensás: IA en visual storytelling // Build as Fast as You Think: AI for Visual Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:Quiero compartir cómo en nuestra redacción en The Times and Sunday Times estamos cruzando IA\, UX y visualización de datos para crear herramientas internas y nuevos formatos de visual storytelling. ¿Qué pasa cuando experimentar es (casi) gratis y crear es tan rápido como pensar?\n\n----\n\nI want to share how\, at The Times and The Sunday Times\, we're combining AI\, UX\, and data visualization to build internal tools and create new forms of visual storytelling.\nWe're a small but highly effective team. This way of working has enabled us to produce projects that have received international awards while also helping our audience discover and embrace new ways of consuming journalism.\nIn this talk\, I'll share concrete examples of how we integrate these disciplines into our editorial workflow\, the lessons we've learned\, and how small teams can build innovative newsroom products with outsized impact. I'll also explore a question that's reshaping creative and editorial work: what happens when experimentation is (almost) free\, and building becomes as fast as thinking?

SUMMARY:Olvídate del embudo: construye comunidad // Kill the funnel! Build community instead
DESCRIPTION:The sales funnel was built to convert strangers to clients. It was never intended to be applied to community building. In the age of omnipresent AI content\, human connection is one of the last true differentiators. At Republik\, we have successfully followed a distinct community-first approach. People don't want to be converted\, they want to be part of something meaningful. In five minutes I'll present the key learnings in community building from the first 10 years of Republik Magazine. The essence on how we got to grow from a small group of people to a 36'000 member strong and resilient community.\n\n-------\nEl embudo de ventas fue diseñado para convertir a desconocidos en clientes.

Can Investigate: How citizens can work with media outlets and hold power to account
DESCRIPTION:What happens when investigative skills move beyond newsrooms and into communities? This lightning talk introduces the work of the Seek Initiative\, a nonprofit that helps citizens\, activists\, community leaders\, and civil society groups investigate issues that matter to them\, from corruption and environmental damage to public spending and political transparency. Rather than treating people as passive consumers of information\, Seek equips them to become investigators themselves. In just a few minutes\, I'll share examples of citizen-led investigations\, explain Seek's "10 Pathways of Investigation" framework\, and show how open\, transparent\, evidence-based methods can help communities uncover facts\, challenge misinformation\, and drive real-world change. At a time when trust in institutions is declining and public-interest journalism faces growing pressures\, citizen investigations offer a powerful model for democratic participation: local knowledge combined with investigative rigour. The future of accountability may not depend on more investigators in newsrooms but on millions of investigators in their own communities.\n\n---------\n¿Qué ocurre cuando las habilidades de investigación salen de las redacciones y llegan a las comunidades? SUMMARY:Do Agents Have Needs? What Journalism Must Do to Survive AI Mediation - Dmitry Shishkin
DESCRIPTION:The route between journalism and its audiences is changing faster than most newsrooms realise — and the User Needs Model alone is no longer enough. AI agents are already acting on behalf of users\, retrieving\, summarising and delivering information before a person ever reaches a publisher's article. The unit of value is shifting from the document to the verifiable fact. This session argues that journalism must now serve two masters simultaneously: the human who needs to understand\, decide or act — and the machine that gets there first. Agents don't have needs\, but they inherit them. And in the process of retrieving\, compressing and transforming journalism\, the signals that make it trustworthy — attribution\, uncertainty\, chronology\, source hierarchy\, editorial intent — can be weakened or lost entirely. The publishers most at risk are often the ones doing the most rigorous work: careful\, nuanced journalism about complex situations may be met with AI silence\, while simpler content from less rigorous sources gets surfaced instead. This session introduces the concept of an Agent Readiness Layer — a practical framework mapping each human user need against what an agent requires to serve it faithfully. This is not a problem any single discipline solves. Getting it right requires media organisations\, AI companies\, data specialists and editorial practitioners working together — and it requires newsrooms to act now\, before the architecture of AI mediation is set without them. The User Needs Model helped journalism move from institutional habit to audience intent.

From Article to Law: How Science Journalism Can Overcome Algorithmic Inertia and Shape Public Policy
We wanted to measure it in social change.\n At The Conversation Spain\, we have turned nearly 13\,000 scientists and researchers into authors of journalistic content. With the "Digital Wellbeing and Minors" project\, we decided to test how far that model could go: Can a news organization\, using the right methodology\, help shape real public policy?\n The project brought together more than 70 articles written by psychologists\, neuroscientists\, educators\, and other experts who examined how the digital ecosystem affects young people and explored evidence-based solutions to these challenges.\n But publishing the content was only the beginning. We took it beyond our website and into communities through 12 events held across Spain\, where scientific knowledge met civil society\, families\, educators\, and young people themselves. These gatherings created a space for direct dialogue between science and the public.\n The outcome was much more than a successful editorial series or well-attended events. The scientific evidence generated through the project became a valuable resource for local governments and civil society organizations during discussions surrounding Spain's Law for the Protection of Minors in Digital Environments.\n In this session\, we will share how this methodology can become a replicable model for any newsroom that wants to move beyond simply reporting on society and instead become an active force for social change.

Esta es la conversación que el sector va a tener de todas formas.\n\n-------\n"It showed up in my feed"&nbsp\;means something different depending on the screen you're looking at. On Google\, it means Search or Discover. On YouTube\, it's a recommendation on your homepage. Every platform has its own path to discovery.\nNews organizations typically produce content once and distribute it everywhere\, without fully understanding which audiences encounter it on which platforms—or in what format.\nThis session presents a real-world audit of a single news event across five platforms. It is not about how to optimize distribution\; it is about what we found. The same story\, five completely different patterns of discovery and consumption.\nThe timing couldn't be more relevant: Google has just announced that Search Console will begin including metrics from social and video platforms. This is a conversation the news industry is going to have anyway—this session brings evidence to help shape it.

SUMMARY:Who's Really Writing the News in Greece? AI\, Disclosure\, and the iNews Response // ¿Quién está escribiendo realmente las noticias en Grecia? IA\, transparencia y la respuesta de iNews.
DESCRIPTION:AI-generated text is already flowing into Greek online media\, but almost no one admits it: neither the outlets nor the journalists\, and least of all to the readers. This talk maps the current state of AI-assisted news production in Greece\, drawing on fresh graduate research that traces the escalating\, largely undisclosed use of AI for article writing. I'll lay out the structural pressures pushing Greek newsrooms toward automation\, such as fragile media economics\, time pressure\, weak regulation\, and language models that still underperform in Greek\, and what these mean for information integrity. Against that backdrop\, I'll introduce iNews\, an Erasmus+ project coordinated by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens with news agencies and media partners across Greece\, Portugal\, France\, and Cyprus\, that equips journalists to use AI responsibly through hands-on bootcamps\, a support chatbot\, summer schools\, and a multilingual podcast.
