What happens when investigative skills move beyond newsrooms and into communities? This lightning talk introduces the work of the Seek Initiative, a nonprofit that helps citizens, activists, community leaders, and civil society groups investigate issues that matter to them, from corruption and environmental damage to public spending and political transparency. Rather than treating people as passive consumers of information, Seek equips them to become investigators themselves. In just a few minutes, I'll share examples of citizen-led investigations, explain Seek's "10 Pathways of Investigation" framework, and show how open, transparent, evidence-based methods can help communities uncover facts, challenge misinformation, and drive real-world change. At a time when trust in institutions is declining and public-interest journalism faces growing pressures, citizen investigations offer a powerful model for democratic participation: local knowledge combined with investigative rigour. The future of accountability may not depend on more investigators in newsrooms but on millions of investigators in their own communities.

¿Qué ocurre cuando las habilidades de investigación salen de las redacciones y llegan a las comunidades? Esta lightning talk presenta el trabajo de Seek Initiative, una organización sin fines de lucro que ayuda a ciudadanos, activistas, líderes comunitarios y organizaciones de la sociedad civil a investigar los temas que afectan a sus comunidades, desde la corrupción y los daños ambientales hasta el gasto público y la transparencia política.
En lugar de considerar a las personas como consumidoras pasivas de información, Seek les brinda herramientas para convertirse en investigadoras e investigadores. En pocos minutos compartiré ejemplos de investigaciones lideradas por la ciudadanía, presentaré el marco metodológico de las 10 Vías de Investigación (10 Pathways of Investigation) y mostraré cómo métodos abiertos, transparentes y basados en evidencia pueden ayudar a las comunidades a descubrir hechos, combatir la desinformación e impulsar cambios reales.
En un contexto de creciente desconfianza hacia las instituciones y de fuertes desafíos para el periodismo de interés público, las investigaciones ciudadanas ofrecen un modelo poderoso de participación democrática: combinar el conocimiento local con el rigor del periodismo de investigación.
Quizás el futuro de la rendición de cuentas no dependa de contar con más periodistas de investigación en las redacciones, sino de millones de personas investigando en sus propias comunidades.
