Journalism is facing a growing crisis of trust, made even more complex by the rise of AI-generated content, platform dependency, and widening information inequalities. Yet many conversations about journalism innovation continue to be shaped by perspectives from the Global North.

This workshop explores what journalism can learn from historically marginalized communities in the Global South, including Indigenous, Quilombola, Black, and peripheral communities in Brazil.

Drawing on findings from the Territórios Digitais research project and experiences from the Black Journalists Network for Diversity in Communication (Rede JP), participants will examine how communities build trust, verify information, and create alternative information infrastructures when traditional institutions fail to meet their needs.

Together, we will discuss how journalists can move beyond extractive reporting practices and develop more participatory, community-centered approaches to reporting, engagement, and information integrity.

Through collaborative exercises and case studies, participants will reflect on questions such as:

Why do some communities trust local leaders more than traditional media?

How do misinformation and AI-generated content affect historically marginalized groups?

What does meaningful community participation in journalism look like?

How can journalism strengthen democratic resilience without reproducing existing inequalities?

What can newsrooms learn from community trust networks in the Global South?

Participants will leave with practical frameworks and tools for building more inclusive, trustworthy, and community-centered journalism practices.
